Headroom: Why Your Mix Distorts on Export

It’s one of the most common panic messages I get: “The mix sounds perfect in the session, but the bounce is distorted.” Nine times out of ten the answer is headroom — or rather, the lack of it. Let’s define it properly, put real numbers on it, and kill the three export mistakes that cause the problem.

What headroom actually is

Headroom is the distance between your signal’s loudest peak and the absolute ceiling of digital audio, 0 dBFS. If your master peaks at -6 dBFS, you have 6 dB of headroom. Touch 0 dBFS and anything beyond it doesn’t get “extra loud” — it gets clipped: the waveform is flattened at the top, which you hear as crunch, harshness or fizz.

Why would the session sound fine and the export distorted? Three usual culprits:

  1. Inter-sample peaks. Your DAW meter shows samples; the reconstructed analog waveform between samples can exceed 0 dBFS even when the meter reads -0.1. Lossy encoding (MP3/AAC, i.e. every streaming platform) makes this worse. This is why mastering uses true peak meters and a ceiling of -1 dBTP.
  2. Floating point hiding the crime. Inside most modern DAWs, audio is 32-bit float — internal busses can go “over” without audible damage. The moment you export to a fixed-point file (16/24-bit WAV), everything above 0 dBFS clips for real.
  3. Plugins after the meter. A limiter with the ceiling at 0.0, dithering after the limiter, or a “character” plugin on the master that adds level you never metered.

If those first two rows are news, read the 5-minute gain staging routine first — headroom problems are gain staging problems wearing a tuxedo.

The three export mistakes

1. “I’ll just pull the master fader down.” This lowers the output but every plugin on the master still receives the hot signal — saturation and limiter artifacts are already printed. Fix levels upstream (group-select all faders, or trim clip gain), not at the end.

2. Bouncing without a true peak limiter. Even a well-staged mix can throw inter-sample peaks. Last device on the master at export: a limiter with true peak detection on, ceiling -1.0 dBTP. Not for loudness — for safety.

3. Normalizing on export. DAW “normalize” raises the file to 0 dBFS peak, eating the exact headroom your mastering engineer (or your future self) needed. Leave it off.

Headroom vs. loudness — they’re not enemies

A common fear: “if I leave 6 dB of headroom my track will be quiet.” Headroom is a working condition, not the final loudness. You mix with headroom; mastering then brings the track to its target level — and as covered in the LUFS guide, streaming normalization means crushing your master buys you nothing anyway. Tracks mixed with proper headroom take limiting gracefully and end up sounding louder at the same LUFS, because their transients survived.

FAQ

My DAW shows clipping on a track but it sounds fine. Problem? Inside a 32-bit float engine, usually not — but it means your gain staging is off, and any non-linear plugin on that track is being overdriven. Fix the level anyway.

Is -6 dBFS of headroom mandatory before mastering? It’s a convention, not a law. What matters is no clipping and no limiting baked into the mix bus. -3 to -6 dBFS peaks is the comfortable zone.
