Gain Staging: 5-Minute Fix for Muddy Mixes
I’ve watched producers spend three hours EQing a mix that was broken before the first plugin loaded. The problem wasn’t the EQ. It was gain staging — or the total absence of it. After 25 years of making records, it’s still the first thing I check when someone sends me a session that “sounds off.”
Here’s the whole concept, the actual numbers to use, and a 5-minute routine you can run on any session in any DAW.
What gain staging actually is
Gain staging is controlling the level of your audio at every point in the signal chain — from the recording, through each plugin, to the master bus. The goal is simple: every stage receives a healthy level. Not too hot (distortion, plugins behaving badly), not too quiet (noise floor, weak meter response).
Think of it like water pressure through a series of pipes. If one pipe is overloaded, everything downstream suffers, no matter how good the downstream pipes are.
Why your mix sounds muddy without it
Three things happen when levels run hot through the chain:
- Analog-modeled plugins saturate wrong. Most compressor and channel-strip emulations are calibrated so that around -18 dBFS equals the “sweet spot” of the hardware they model. Feed them -6 dBFS and you’re slamming a virtual circuit into territory it was never voiced for. The result is harshness and smear you’ll then try to “fix” with EQ.
- Compressors overreact. A hot signal hits the threshold harder, so you get more gain reduction than you intended, with pumping artifacts.
- The master bus runs out of headroom. When everything sums hot, your limiter has to work brutally hard at the end, crushing transients — that’s the “muddy, small” sound.
The numbers that matter
- Per track average level: around -18 dBFS (peaks around -10 to -8 dBFS) hitting the first plugin.
- Master bus before limiting: peaks around -6 dBFS, leaving real headroom for mastering.
- Recording: same idea — track with peaks around -10 dBFS. You can’t fix a clipped recording later.
These aren’t laws of physics; they’re conventions that make every plugin you own behave the way its designer intended.
The 5-minute routine
- Bypass everything on the master bus.
- Play the loudest section of the song.
- **Track by track, set the clip gain or a gain utility (not the fader) so each track averages around -18 dBFS.** Faders stay near 0 — they’re for mixing decisions, not level correction.
- Check between plugins. If a compressor adds make-up gain, trim its output so what leaves the plugin matches what entered. Most plugins have an output knob exactly for this.
- Look at the master. If it peaks above -6 dBFS with faders at reasonable positions, pull all faders down together (group-select) — don’t lower the master fader.
That’s it. Run this once and your EQ moves get smaller, your compressors behave, and the mix opens up — usually before you change a single “creative” setting.
Common mistakes
- Fixing level with the master fader. It lowers the output but every plugin upstream still receives a hot signal. The damage already happened.
- Gain staging once and forgetting it. Every plugin you add can change the level. Get in the habit of matching input/output loudness when you insert anything.
- Confusing loud with good. Louder always sounds “better” in an A/B. Level-match before judging any plugin.
Tools that help
Your DAW’s built-in gain utility is enough. If you want metering, any VU meter plugin calibrated to -18 dBFS = 0 VU makes this visual and fast. FAQ
Does gain staging matter with digital-only plugins? Less than with analog emulations, but yes: compressors, saturators and your master chain all respond to input level regardless of modeling.
Is -18 dBFS RMS or peak? Average (RMS-ish). Peaks will naturally sit higher, around -10 dBFS, and that’s fine.
Do I need to gain stage if I use a loudness-normalized platform like Spotify? Yes. Normalization changes playback volume, not the distortion and compression artifacts baked into your mix.
