A practice case
Create space without raising the lead
The browser generates a note motif and a sustained layer sharing part of its harmonic region. A combines both; B reduces that layer. The melody has the same gain in both versions. This compares a relationship between signals; it is not a plugin demonstration or a real vocal recording.
Overall level can differ because part of the backing is reduced. Do not treat this as a contest for which sounds better. Follow one note: is it easier to distinguish? Then hear the background: has it become too empty? Both questions also apply to a mix.
