Mix decisions

Finish a muddy mix without stripping its body

Mud is usually an accumulation problem. Find which sources occupy the same low-mid region at the same time.

The starting point

A muddy mix usually needs separation between sources rather than an automatic master-bus cut. Find who is accumulating energy before removing body from the whole song.

A practice case

Bass, guitar and piano fill the same space

Practice case: piano sounds round alone, guitar warm, bass full. Together in the chorus they reduce vocal definition. Mute one family at a time to find which combination creates the buildup.

Try a small change to the less important source in that section. A piano inversion or one fewer low guitar note may be enough. With EQ, compare the verse too: a global cut can fix the chorus and thin out a section where the source stands alone.

When to stop

Separation improves without losing the intended weight of bass, vocal or harmonic instruments.

Quick diagnosis and decision protocol

Check first

  1. Check 120-500 Hz in context.
  2. Mute groups to locate the contributors.
  3. Compare low-mid energy against a level-matched reference.

Then decide

  1. Remove unnecessary lows source by source.
  2. Use small arrangement or envelope changes before a broad master EQ cut.
  3. Recheck vocal/body balance after each low-mid move.

Measurement boundary

A spectral tilt can describe the symptom; the mix buses tell you where to act.

Watch out for this: A large master high-pass or low-mid scoop can hide the cause and thin every source at once.
